Paola Pedraza-Peñalosa, Ph.D.

Research Botanist, Plant systematist

My main research interest are the taxonomy, evolution, and conservation of the plant family Ericaceae, a fascinating and biodiverse group that includes several species of global and local economic importance such as the blueberries, lingonberries, arándanos, and mortiños, among others.

Within Ericaceae, I am mostly concerned with the systematics of many members of the tribe Vaccinieae that inhabit the neotropical region. Vaccinieae are also an exciting group to study because they are the food source of many animals from hummingbirds to mammals, about 94% of the neotropical species are endemic, and many of them are endangered. For my studies, I combine molecular, anatomical, and morphological data, based on field and collections based research.

I also conduct collections-oriented research that seeks to contribute to both the conservation and botanical knowledge of the Tropical Andes, a region with one of the highest levels of biodiversity and endemism in the world, but which faces accelerated habitat loss and remains poorly understood. Through the study and documentation of the flora of the tropical mountains and paramos, I help to identify endangered species and conservation hotspots.
